11/5/2011- classwork

What makes an action hero-

The hero must be able to fight  and to be able to react quickly and think of solutions on the spot, they also need to be experienced so to cope with the dangers he come across.

Pirates of the Caribbean. - the curse of the black pearl

Jack Sparrow- not the stereotypical hero, but being one of the main protagonists he has all the necessities that a hero has.
He can think on the spot- when Will (Orlando Bloom) asks him to help him find elizabeth jack comes up with an idea steal a ship- and goes under water with a wooden boat above their heads. then while purposely failing to steal the boat - the commodore comes along to stop him and boards the ship- jack and will then switch ships.
he can fight and fend for himself- for instance the fight with Captain Barbossa at the end- the sword fight at isle de murta- and there again he had stolen a coin from the aztec case so he cant die in the fight he knew that was coming.

Leadership- he's able to persuade his friend at Tortuga to find him a ship crew.
And even though that there is a pirate code that who falls behind has to be left, his ship mates come for him at the end to rescue him from his scheduled hanging.

All these statements are stereotypically tied with heros.

imgres.jpgI had chosen Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean as he's not the stereotype of a hero- i personally thinks he's a twisted version of one and occasionally puts on an act that he's not the good guy and is only doing it for himself but in the his true side does come out.
what makes him more heroic is that he comes up with the most weirdest and odd ideas that to me, he's my favourite hero.

Icons:
Johnny Depp- dressed up as Jack Sparrow- he's become an icon himself for the Pirates of the Caribbean
batman - the bat icon
harry potter- his scar - his wand- his glasses- harry potter himself- Ron and hermione.

iconography-

gladiator_3.jpg

Image of Russell Crowe in the Gladiator. -
ready for a fight - wearing gladiator armour - shows that theres violence, fighting/action taking place-  it looks like he's in an arena- getting ready for a battle with another gladiator.

the image of the the gladiator is an icon for the gladiator film - with his armour and his sword
- him being the gladiator.- this makes it exciting for the audience as it suggests with his body language that he's confident about the battle he's about to do.

Watch the trailer for Casino Royal and list any elements that you think might appeal to the following groups

Men- Guns, cars, fights, violence, attractive women, casinos, James Bond Classics

Women – Romance, actors (James Bond)

Teens- the fighting, action, actors,violence.

Adults – action, plot line

British Viewers- it is a British film-

American Viewers- the actors- it’s a big production

Men and teens have the most annotations
The least was women and adults.

I think that the makers of the film may have intentionally targeted the film at men and teens who are interested in cars, guns, violence and fights. The makers might have not purposely tried to alienate the women as they did include some romance.

I don’t think the figure agree with my ideas above as they show the amount of money received from the US and the UK.

Pirates of the Caribbean – the poster fits into the action adventure theme- the poster includes-Swords –Guns- treasure pirates- attractive woman.

The fugitive – this poster kind of fits into the action adventure theme-someone running fast- a man it doesn’t suggest much that it is an action adventure movie.  The name fugitive

Gladiator- the name gladiator – a man standing in armour- suggest a war/fighting/action.

Avatar- the actor in poster has no expression- the poster, to me, doesn’t suggest that it’s an action adventure film

The poster for the Pirates of the Caribbean looks more of an action adventure film than the others as there is more that’s suggest to the audience that it is.

What the audience would expect from an action adventure film-
They would expect there to be and adventure to achieve/find and/or destroy, where the main characters would go through numerous of problems and solutions on their journey along with some action- fighting/violence.

Action adventure films are popular with audiences because most include quite a lot what appeals to the target audiences.

Some people critisise Action adventure films=
Simple theme, mediocre storyline, cheesy dialogues, low quality scripts.

-
my idea for an action adventure film-

Just Under.

a small, timid girl, lives with her dad- whos always away at work- hes an archaeologist-
she then recieves news that hes been declared dead. wanting to find out ther truth herself she sneak of out to find him. not knowing how to do it she catches a plan, and of course arouses suspicions that a small girl like her is all alone.
though small and seemingly harmless- in her free time she had learnt all arts of defence- and is heavily armed.
and at bags check and the metal detectors she then attacks the man who simply asks her to open her bags and the becomes wanted for assault to a police officer.  a sole journey across the world- testing her defence and risking her life she finds that her dad had possessed an aztec idol which had posessed him giving him the appearance that hes dead.
she has to take back the idol which also hold many powers in which the holder can choose from what he thinks
